If you're planning to study in New Zealand for more than three months, you will need a student visa. New Zealand student visas usually allow full-time students to work up to 20 hours a week during the academic year and up to 40 hours a week during semester breaks. What is The Green List The Green List is a list of occupations identified by the government as “hard-to-fill” roles. It includes roles in Construction, Engineering, Trades, Health & Social Services, Primary Industries and Science roles, ICT, Electronics & Telecommunications roles, and Agriculture. The Green List has two tiers. Tier 1 occupations qualify you to be fast-tracked to residence and Tier 2 occupations qualify you for a work to residence pathway.

Green List Straight to Residence (Tier 1) – a direct path to residence in New Zealand for people who are working for an Accredited Employer or hold a job offer from one. Your role must be on Tier 1 of the Green List. You must meet the requirements set out on the list for your role.

Green List Work to Residence (Tier 2) - a path to residence after 2 years of working in New Zealand in one of the Green List Tier 2 occupations or earning 2x the median wage per hour.

Green List Care Workforce Work to Residence Visa (Tier 2) – a path to resident for people who have worked in New Zealand for at least 24 months in a Care Workforce sector in specifically listed Care Workforce occupations.

Highly Paid - a path to residency after 2 years of working in New Zealand and can demonstrate that they have been highly paid (at least twice the national average) while working in New Zealand for 24 months.

Skilled Migrant Category – a points-based system that focuses on skills that the government has decided New Zealand needs for economic growth. Points are awarded for age, qualifications, skilled experience, and skilled employment or an offer of employment in New Zealand. The points-based system consists of two steps. The first step is to submit an expression of interest (EOI). If successful, you will be invited to apply for residence. If residence is approved, you and your family (including dependent children aged 24 and under) can live and work in New Zealand indefinitely. This process is complex. Business Visa: If you are an experienced businessperson wanting to start a business in New Zealand, you can apply for an entrepreneur visa. This visa can lead to residence in New Zealand after either six months or 24 months depending on your business plan.

Investor Visa: The Investor business migration visas are for investors who want to gain residence in New Zealand. The new Active Investor Plus visa category replaced the previous Investor 1 and Investor 2 visa categories. The Active Investor Plus visa category encourages direct investment in New Zealand companies through a weighting system. The system sets lower weighting for indirect investments. Investor migrants will need to spend at least 117 days in New Zealand over the four-year investment period and includes an English language requirement (minimum IELTS score of 5.0).

New Zealand provides three visa options for retirement migrants: The Parent Retirement Category, the Temporary Retirement Category and The Parent Resident Visa Category.

The Parent Retirement Category and The Parent Resident Category are permanent residence programs whilst the Temporary Retirement Category is a special Visitor Visa which entitles the holder to stay in New Zealand for a period of two years.

Both retirement categories require the applicants to be of good health and character, make an investment in New Zealand and demonstrate ownership of additional settlement or maintenance funds. The Parent Retirement Category also requires the applicant to have a New Zealand citizen or resident adult child, who is willing to sponsor them.

The Parent Retirement Resident Visa - to be eligible, you need a yearly income of NZ$60,000, NZ$1 million to invest over 4 years, and a further NZ$500,000 to live on. You can apply for permanent residence after 4 years.

The Temporary Retirement Visitor Visa - to be eligible you must be 66 or above, have NZ$75,000 to invest in New Zealand for 2 years, a further NZ$500,000 to live on and an annual income of NZ$60,000.

The Parent Resident Visa - to be eligible you must have New Zealand citizen or resident adult child, who is willing to sponsor you and the key requirements are guaranteed minimum income from the New Zealand child.

If you are the parent or grandparent of a New Zealand citizen or resident, the parent and grandparent visitor visa category allows you to apply for a three year multiple entry visitor visa. The parent and grandparent visitor visa has multiple entry conditions, allowing you to make multiple trips to New Zealand and is valid for 3 years from the date of issue.
